Borneo Kratom Buyer's Guide

Posted by Bianca Gonzalez

Borneo kratom is one of the most popular types of kratom in the United States. What many people do not know is that it is not actually a strain of kratom. It is called this because it is kratom that comes from Borneo, a large island in Asia.

No matter where it comes from, there are only three kratom strains. The soil composition of where the kratom grows has a profound effect on its overall quality and quantity. It just happens that all three strains are grown in Borneo and shipped to the United States.

General Facts About Borneo Kratom

The kratom tree is in the coffee family and can be found all over Southeast Asia and in other tropical climates. People have been using this plant for centuries for both its coffee-like properties and in various religious ceremonies.

The first written information on kratom dates back to 1839 when a 32-year-old botanist first formally described it as a substitute for the less natural ways to relieve discomfort.

Most kratom trees produce all three strains. The strain changes with seasonal changes in the area that they grow. Between the seasons, it is possible to see both white and red-veined leaves on the same plant.

Alkaloids in Kratom

What makes kratom special are the alkaloids. There are five basic alkaloids in kratom. These are mitragynine, 7-hydroxy mitragynine, speciociliatine, speciogynin, and paynantheine.

These are the active ingredients. The different strains of kratom have different amounts of each alkaloid. These alkaloids are what may produce feelings of calm or energy depending on the amount of each one.

Strains of Kratom

There are three main strains of kratom. Each strain is said to behave differently. The strains are named for their color. You may see the words Maeng Da before each of these strains. Maeng da means superior quality in Thailand. It refers to the process of combining two kratom strains by grafting.

During this process, two types of kratom are grafted together to produce a hardier and superior kratom tree. Since grafting can combine the best types of trees into one, it is rapidly becoming the most widely used method of creating kratom.

Quick Guide

For quick reference, here are the different strains.

  • Red - relaxing, comforting, and relief
  • Green - a mixture of invigorating, relief, and comforting
  • White - energizing,  invigorating and stabilizing

You can choose the strains that fit you best.

Red Vein Kratom

Red vein kratom is the most popular strain. It is also the most available strain. It is sometimes marketed as red Borneo kratom. As its name suggests, it has a startling red vein through the center of the leaf. The powder often has a red or rust-colored tinge to it.

If you are new to kratom, the red vein is where you want to start. It is the most versatile strain and is knowing to both soothe or uplift depending on the amount. This strain is also known as a tranquility strain.

Green Vein Kratom

Green vein kratom, named for the completely green leaves with a darker green running up the center,  is known as a middle-of-the-road strain. The powder is a darker or greyish green, without any highlights at all.

This is appropriate because its qualities are said to be somewhere between the red vein and white vein strains. It is a popular strain because it helps with energy levels while creating a feeling of calm and comfort.

The green vein is also known to be compatible with most people.  It is milder than the other two strains. It may also help with feelings of self-consciousness and reducing inhibitions.

White Vein Kratom

Where red vein is more calming, white vein, like coffee, helps with energy levels, clarity, and mood. Visually it has a light green or white vein running through the center of the leaf, and the powder has a paler color than either the green or red. If you want something for your focus, mood, or energy, the white vein is an excellent choice.

Mixed Strains

Some companies sell mixed versions of the different Borneo Kratom strains to produce the desired result. This is done to achieve an intended purpose, but the kratom strains react differently when used by different people.

You can find various strains that are mixed for you into a variety of blends. This is different from the grafting that produces Maeng Da Borneo Kratom. If you are looking for a specific effect, try a blended or mixed version of kratom.

How To Try Kratom

If you are new to buying kratom, there are a few things that you can do to make sure you get the best from it.

  • Start slowly at first, until you know how you react
  • Do not take other medications, recreational drugs, or supplements with kratom. There are several which are known to interact with it, including antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications.
  • Eat before you use kratom
  • Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how you will react

When choosing how you utilize kratom or any other product, be responsible with it.

Kratom Quality

Kratom is made from the leaves only. No other part of the tree is involved. They are harvested and dried. The quality of the kratom comes from how it is grown, the growing medium, and when it is harvested.

Kratom farmers try to harvest it when the colors are the brightest, and the leaves are at full maturity. After it is dried, the leaves are ground into a fine powder. The powder is then used to make other forms.

It needs to be stored in a cool, dry, and preferably dark place to remain fresh. People also recommend that you store it in an air-tight container to preserve its quality.

If you would rather try capsules instead of power, you can find most of our kratom blends in capsules form as well. Capsules are an easier-to-store kratom product.

Concerns About Kratom

Kratom is currently being studied for its potential uses in the United States. These studies are only in early phase one. There are no preliminary results published on it.

It currently exists in a grey area legally, so check with your local and state government to make sure that it is legal in your area before you purchase it. Kratom is still illegal in some areas.

You should always discuss kratom with your doctor before you decide to use it. Like all products, there is a chance that it will interact with other products creating an undesirable effect. Consulting a doctor can help prevent this.

Although kratom was used for centuries to help with energy and well-being, new uses are being researched. Now all that is left to do is decide which strain you want to try.
